Ron's Catch: Crank It Up!

Now that fall is finally upon us the days get shorter, the nights get cooler, and the bass fishing just gets better.

This is the perfect time to grab a couple of rods and tie up a few crankbaits. As this transition period from summer into fall takes place over the next few weeks, bass will move around quite a bit and most likely close to any school of baitfish. Tying up a deep, medium, and shallow crankbait will give you the versatility to cover different depths when looking for bass. Cover water and turn that fishing reel is the best option to find fishing success this time of year. Yes, you can use other lures, but when fish are in the feeding mindset and willing to chase down a lure, it is hard to beat a crankbait.

Moving around from deeper points or ledges and making your way onto shallower flats, bays, and unto coves where bass will push the baitfish will key you in on location and depth they are most likely feeding. 15 to 20 feet depths are perfect for the deep crankbait such as the Yo-Zuri Hardcore 4+ which dives 14 to 18 feet, the Yo-Zuri 3DR mid crank for depths 7 to 10 feet, and the Yo-Zuri squarebill from 2 to 6 feet if you can pay close attention to your electronics to locate fish and bait. Once you find the bass and fire up the school it can be a fish on every few casts for minutes or even hours. This time of year, it is not uncommon to locate several schools at various depths. It is best to throw crankbaits on an actual crankbait rod which is designed specifically for this technique. A crankbait rod has the right parabolic bend which loads up properly to avoid losing fish and helps prevent fish from throwing the hooks. Even with treble hooks bass can break your heart and come unbuttoned if your rod action is off. Shoppers Supply has a variety of fishing rods and a large selection of crankbaits to choose from, so head on over so you can get crankin’ this fall!
